Viewers are getting a little closer to brand new episodes of The White Lotus as filming for season 2 has officially wrapped. The show filmed most of its second outing at San Domenico Palace in Taormina in Italy and on location in Sicily. Later, the HBO project was quietly filmed for a month at Lumina Studios, which recently signed a six-year strategic pact with resurgent Italian studio Cinecittà, reports Deadline. The iconic facility is expanding its capacity due to demand for studio space.
Cinecittà has recently needed to host some productions in satellite rooms like Lumina, which has four sound stages. The need for more space is a sign of the growing interest in Italy as a production destination. It’s as impressive as the studio was able to attract The White Lotus Season 2 which is one of the most popular shows in the United States. The first season was the most awarded series at the last Emmy Awards, winning 10 awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
The White Lotus Season 2 will air next October. Although a specific date has yet to be announced, HBO released a trailer for season two last month. The clip is shot as an advertisement for the fictional resort chain’s rewards program known as “Petal and Blossom Circles”. The video features a soundtrack of quiet music and footage of a luxury boat called “The White Lotus – Sicily” on open water.
Tanya McQuoid-Hunt praises The White Lotus in a voiceover, saying that every time she stays at one of the resort’s properties, it’s always a memorable experience. Another voiceover takes over, as various images of guests, hotel staff and the beautiful Sicilian landscape are shown. The “ad” ends with a graphic that reads: “Now taking reservations for October”. The address that appears on screen takes viewers to a website for The White Lotus where they can find out all about the show and upcoming season two.
Created by Mike White for HBO, The White Lotus chronicles the lives of guests and employees of the fictional White Lotus resort chain. Over time, their stay at the hotel is marked by their various dysfunctions. Originally conceived as a six-part limited series, the comedy/drama premiered in July 2021 to rave reviews and high ratings.
Due to its success, the network decided to renew it as an anthology series. Jennifer Coolidge’s portrayal of the grieving heiress was so popular that she will be one of two returning members for The White Lotus Season 2.
Meanwhile, the creator of The White Lotus is keenly aware that his series on the corrosive effects of privilege and wealth also perpetuated the issues he wanted to ridicule. While Mike White defends his vision for the first season, he also hopes season two will help expand the worldview of the story.
While the latest outing redirects the drama to Sicily, the cast of characters will delve into relationship dynamics and gender roles, instead of the issues of colonialism and socio-economic cultural gaps seen in the first season. It will also find new ways to display the worst 1%.
